About Chile

Workers from Mennonite Mission Network and its predecessor agencies have served in Chile periodically for relatively short periods of time since 1982 in a variety of ministries, relating with diverse partners and churches, including Iglesia Evangélica Menonita de Chile (IEMCH), and Puerta del Rebaño.

Feb. 27, 2010, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck the country of Chile. Partner churches immediately began assessing damages and planning ways to support victims of the earthquake. Mennonite Mission Network and Mennonite Church Canada helped introduce Mennonite Central Committee to Chilean church partners to plan a longer-term disaster response together.

Two consistent roles for Mission Network are Anabaptist biblical teaching/resources and networking to encourage churches with Anabaptist interest to connect with others in Chile, neighboring countries, and beyond. In 2011, the Iglesia Evangélica Menonita de Chile was accepted as the 100th member church of Mennonite World Conference, and in 2013, they hosted the Cono Sur gathering of Mennonite churches in the southern part of South America. Puerta del Rebaño in Concepción became Anabaptist in the 1990s as Carlos Gallardo and Monica Parada began pastoral leadership. They had studied church history and Anabaptist theology with former mission worker Titus Guenther, at a branch of the Evangelical Theological Community (CTE) in Concepción.

In 2015, Palmer Becker spent 10 days in Chile teaching on What is an Anabaptist Christian?, both with Anabaptist churches and also other groups exploring Anabaptist theology.
